The color of a bronze sculpture is determined by the artist and how they apply the patina. Don prefers to stick to nature in his art, and uses Ferric Nitrate to add brown color and Sulfurated Potash to add black tones to the elk bust. The chemicals that create the sculpture's patina are mixes with water and sprayed onto the bronze and then immediately blasted with a blowtorch to set. After the chemicals have been applied, water is poured over the sculpture and after it dries, wax is painted on to give it a glossy sheen.
