The town of Corvallis, Mont., rests along the banks of the Bitterroot River between the Sapphire and Bitterroot Mountains. The history of Corvallis is written in the families that live there - from the Huls Dairy Farm to Mountain View Orchards, from Bay’s Hardware to Memories Café.

Like many towns in Montana, the community is held together by small businesses, bars, cafes, churches and schools.

This unincorporated town maintains its rich agricultural roots while negotiating the rapid changes of the 21st century. In the second fastest growing county in the state, Corvallis still preserves its small town values.

Corvallis is the first in a series of Montana towns that advanced photojournalism students at the University of Montana’s School of Journalism will visit and document.

Our goal – to accurately portray the people, places and stories we encounter.

Montana is an amazing place to live and as we visit each town we hope to discover another piece of this great state’s heritage– along with a different vista of the landscape that we call the Last Best Place.

We welcome your comments.
