Home Stories About Past Projects

Nestled on the southern shore of Seeley Lake between the mountains of the Bob Marshall Wilderness to the east and the Mission Mountain Wilderness to the west, the town of Seeley Lake hasn’t fallen far from its roots as a timber, fur and lakeside town. Although the economics have changed since 1881 when Jasper B. Seely arrived while working for the Hammond Lumber Company – mountains, trees, rivers, lakes and people still define the town’s identity. According to the book "Montana Place Names," early surveyors added an "e" when naming the lake.  Timber and tourism dominate the current economy, but other great stories exist in the small town that rests just above 4,000 feet. During the second year of the Montana Towns Project, students from The University of Montana School of Journalism documented the stories of this western Montana town.
